Since 2009, ATHENS MARATHON has launched a new Charity and Social Liability Program, which totally comports with the character of the event.

The Athens Marathon Charity Program is addressed to the Non-Governmental Organizations (Charity Organizations) which choose to actively participate in the parallel event and races of the Athens Marathon. This program offers the involved charities organization the opportunity to use the actual event and their participation in it as a mean to sensitize the Greek and international runners on their scope and at the same time collect money for the realization of their goals and aims.

The 2016 Athens Marathon Charity Program involves the following Charity Organizations:

We’re an international organisation, working with over 15 million people in 45 countries for a world free from poverty and injustice. Our head office is in Johannesburg. We’re the only international development organisation with our head office based in Africa. We also have offices right across Asia, the Americas and Europe. We believe the people whose lives our work affects should decide how we’re run. And that’s what makes us different. We help people use their own power to fight poverty and injustice. Because that’s how real change happens – for families, for communities, for whole societies.

When large-scale epidemics occur, when areas in crisis are too dangerous for many others, then the medical teams from MSF are there to ensure that the affected population can count on continual care being provided for their most basic health-care needs. They organize basic medical care, treat the injured, carry out vaccination campaigns, train local medical staff and build up medical infrastructure. In long-term aid projects they dedicate themselves to the fight against diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, sleeping sickness, and HIV/AIDS. The on-location work of our expats is often very exhausting, but also fascinating, demanding appropriate professional knowledge, and a large amount of motivation and commitment
